~Jenna Levine (My Roommate Is a Vampire)

Being a literature-freak girl who loves mystery, romance, fiction, contemporary fiction and fantasy when the genres of books come up, I treated my best friend with a chocolate box who gifted me the book “My Roommate is a Vampire” on a random day.

The title and the cover of this book were something which attracted me significantly in the first instance, having a girl and vampire aside. I quickly read reviews of some of my favorite authors (they didn’t have spoilers, of course).

Including a vampire in the contemporary world adds a modern taste to the mystical concept of vampires. This made me read the complete novel in a single sitting and I could not be more satisfied about the same. Let’s dive into this book review and I’ll leave it to you to see how much you can resist before reading the same.

A peep into the plot

“My Roommate is a Vampire” by Jenna Levine starts with the struggles of Cassie Greenberg, who has a degree in fine arts. She has major financial issues due to a lack of her dream job. Additionally, she receives an eviction notice after which she looks for cheap accommodation.

She finds an amazing deal for being a roommate in a spacious apartment in one of Chicago’s most beautiful neighborhoods. Her roommate, Frederick J. Fitzwilliam, explains that he’ll be out during the night for business work. And hence, will be sleeping the whole day.  Although a skeptical scenario, Cassie moves into the apartment since her needs align with this arrangement strangely. Frederick writes notes in his beautiful handwriting for her as a means of communication which Cassie finds extremely adorable. They develop a weird yet lovely and sensual relationship gradually.

One strange day, she forgets something at home and returns to find plastics full of blood in the refrigerator and an ongoing vampire party. It’s then that Frederick comes crystal clear in front of Cassie with the truth that he’s a vampire in reality. He has been in a deep slumber for 100 years and has his own specific problems to deal with. Further, the novel unravels the reaction that Cassie shows after knowing the dark truth about his roommate and how things take a turn following this.

Book Review: My views on the book

The diverse aspects of this novel keep readers like me hooked on till the end. The handwritten notes that Frederick wrote for Cassie, stand as a symbol of old-school romance between them, besides the exchange of letters.

Frederick struggles to be updated with today’s tech-savvy world in small ways which gets displayed as a cute gesture. His gentleman-like sharp and contrasting features pose as an attractive attribute. Besides, a brief history and knowledge of vampire mythology add a vintage style to this contemporary world. Cassie, as a character, can be related in various ways, as far as her struggles, dreams, expectations and behavior are concerned.
